"Noticably better than last years" - 6 October 2008
Now the title may indicate that I wasn't a fan of last years but actually it was my most played game on the wii purely down to its pick up & play-ability. This years edition instantly is better purely because it has a manager mode , if they released last years game with just a manager mode I would have been happy, they didn't they put new controls in which at first I thought we're very off putting but after a couple of matches I was getting used to it & now feel it's genuinely for the benefit of the game( even if you get confused when playing with your mates & little cursors are flying all over the screen, ) My friends first comment was "god these controls are difficult " but he also settle after a couple of mii matches. ( the mii matches are a welcome extra also just a little bit of fun but reminds me of the mario charged football ie arcade style )
The manager mode is VERY basic you can't really do a lot with it but you can buy/sell players deal with contracts/media & nurture talent ( sort of.... my player at stoke went up 3 levels in one match but the next match returned to his old level ??? don't know why & no manual to explain ) Again I am not putting it down it's just we're all used to football manager & champ manager's deph of controls but of course this just isn't achievable with the wii unfortunately, either way very pleased to have it in & certainly better than just entering tornament after tornament last last year.
The graphics are improved but to be honest I couldn't tell because I think the camera angle I choose, but the replays really do show some pretty impressive shots of players that look like the real players ( even dave kitson was pretty darn good considering he's at stoke I Was quite surprised ) In game sound is as good as last year no real need for improvement. One thing I have noticed which I'm disapointed with is the Music on the disc, last years was brilliant loads of songs & I often left the wii on with the music playing around the house but this years songs aren't the same style or even don't seem to be so many of them so I am slightly disapointed on that note. Gameplay,it flows great charactors respond well to this new meter we have so you really have to build your play up to score great goals, the players slow dramatically when they are tired & I actually have to be tactical now & not run them around the pitch all match on pressing mode as I end up needing to use all of my substitures. Shooting: this one is a biggy I spent ages running around the pitch trying to find areas you can score fluke goals from ( as in fifa 08 it was near the corner you fire one in at the keeper & the keeper hits it into his own net worked about everyone 1 in 3, also the keeper often chucked it to his closest defender & if you marked him you could pick up an easy goal) but this one wow there is nowhere, the GK is actually clever now you hit a shot from the corner & it flies off ANYWHERE the game relies a lot of randomness ( by that I think it means my players abilities perhaps if I had rooney , the guy on the front cover :p he would be able to score some screamers ) also I spent a lot of time practicing in the 'academy' where you learn like practice mode, & the shots do just seem to be random sometimes left sometimes a bit to the right & you run & hit & bang over the bar. So shooting a little disapointing when EA know the only thing people want is to score beautifully random goals every so often.
So to sum it up, the new controls are great but last years weren't bad so they could have kept them as another option, management mode MAKES this game but it's still as enjoyable as last years, I have yet to use the game cube controllers on it so perhaps that will help when friends come around. Other than that what more could you add?? I would just love football manager interface with fifa game inside but I definately think that is pc territory. 8/10 would be my grade as its not vastly different on last years but longetivity will keep this going till next year if you have friends that enjoy a good game now & again.

"Great Game - Cheated by online laziness!" - 5 October 2008
This game is vastly improved compared to 08.
The controls are ripped from Pro Evo, but simplified and they work well.
The Mii mini games and 8 Vs 8 matches are class.
All in all its a great game.
Take it online and it's a poor job. The matches work fine, the servers are great, it's just that there's no Mii matches and no "point and click" passing, ie, all the things they've added are missing online.
It's plain lazy and prevents this great game from achieving a great score!

"fifa a copy cat, don't buy it" - 7 October 2008
fifa 09 graphics are worst than pro evo's this year and all fusy fifa 03 better on gamecube
manager mode decent
mii footie match is better than the origial gameplay and you can see they spent more time on that
online is terrible compared to pro evo
gameplay is copying pro evo
can't move players of the ball which is a big let down
fifa 09 is a con
shooting is great on the game and so is the tackling
and skills on the game is the best bit
wait till pro evo 09 as the gameplay is better
the use of Gamecube remote is good stuff
crossing is hard as it's not accurate
if the graphics were better and moving players of the ball this would of been the best footie game on the wii
