Editorial: The active-play phenomenon started by Wii Sports now spreads to your whole body thanks to Wii Fit and the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board, which comes bundled with it. Used together players will experience an extensive array of fun, dynamic and surprisingly challenging activities, including aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and balance oriented games. The focus of these activities is towards providing a "core" workout, a popular exercise method that emphasizes slower, controlled motions, but it's the fun approach to fitness of Wii Fit that will keep players hooked on fitness for years to come.

The Wii Fit Balance Board
The primary tenet of Wii Fit is balance. Your centre of balance, the point between your left and right sides when you stand upright, has a lot to do with your health. Those without an even centre of balance will be unnaturally compensating for this imbalance, which causes their posture to become misaligned, increasing the possibility of putting unnecessary strain on their bodies. This is where the Wii Balance Board comes in.

Similar in appearance to a step aerobics board, the Wii Balance Board is much, much more. Easily capable of supporting weights up to a maximum of 300 pounds, it is sturdy and precise, able to measure weight and register pressure accurately when placed on a variety of flat surfaces. This advanced level of sensitivity allows for both the wide range of activities found in the Wii Fit software as well as the board's amazing ability recognize individual players by their weight alone.

Getting Started: Create a Profile
Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you'll start by creating a profile. This is done easily and intuitively by simply choosing a Mii, entering your height and age information, and doing a few quick tests that will serve as a baseline for your new Wii fitness regimen. These tests are:

  • BMI Check: BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you'll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.
  • Wii Fit Age: After you've checked your BMI, you'll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance. Based on the results, you'll be assigned a Wii Fit Age.

Four Categories of Fun
Once you have created your profile it's time to have some fun. Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from: Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga and Balance Games. Wii Fit will guide you through the first three with the help of your own virtual personal trainer, while the balance games offer variety and fun to help keep you engaged and excited about your fitness goals. In addition, as you spend time exercising, you'll earn Fit Credits that unlock additional exercises and activities within your favourite categories that will allow you to continue to push yourself. See more detail on the four categories below:

  • Strength Training:

5 out of 5  "Totally Amazing Fun!!" - 25 April 2008
My board arrived exactly on time this morning ... it is everything I hoped it would be and more - it is so much fun, you can now exercise with a smile on your face. The step aerobics is so enjoyable and even the jogging is not a chore. This is definitly a new addiction but one which can only do good - get it and enjoy.

5 out of 5  "A couple of additional thoughts..." - 25 April 2008
There will be no shortage of rave reviews for Wii Fit. I wanted to add a couple of other things that struck me, which might not otherwise get mentioned.

Firstly, I was concerned that it would have a correct model of body mass index (bmi) for children, and indeed it does seem to. The target range for adults is 20-25 - but it accepted my children (ages between 6 and 12) as normal with lower bmis - as it ought to.

On the other hand, the only target that it seems to set is associated with weight - by how many pounds do you wish to increase or decrease your weight over what timescale. This isn't helpful for children, who will naturally increase in weight and height (!), and for many pre-teen/young teen girls in particular, may encourage inappropriate attempts at weight loss or control. It would have been good had the game supported something like an early stamina test, and then offered as a target an increase in stamina. Similarly, the Wii Fit age in relation to a child seems somewhat misleading. Wii Fit does, however, make clear when somebody is in an appropriate bmi range, and doesn't encourage them to lose weight. So Nintendo are certainly not being reckless in this regard.

Also, it's a bit of a shame that - as with Wii Sports - it is possible to "cheat" to go for high scores. The jogging thing, for example, detects the up-down motion of the remote to work out pacing. It's possible to get a "high score" just by lifting the remote up and down, and not running. Of course, this won't help a person get fit, which is what it's really all about - but irritating places on high score tables could be taken up by people who have worked out how to cheat.

And along these lines, it would probably have been better if only an individual's best score were kept on the high score table, rather than one person being able to fill up the whole table for an activity, which can be demoralising for the rest of the family ....

However, I would echo the other positive comments about the game/system in general. Anything that encourages a less sedentary lifestyle, and exercises muscles - which this certainly does - has to be recommended. It does it in a fun and helpful way. The training regime it offers is varied and seems well thought out. Going to the gym requires - well, going to the gym. If I can do something to get fit in a spare quarter hour at home, I'm more likely to. If I can get more positive use out of the Wii, then that's a good thing too. The only real problem might be the premature wearing out of our carpet ...!

5 out of 5  "Superb" - 25 April 2008
Arrived 10am and 4 of us have been taking turns throughout the day. The first thing I noticed was how weighty the board is. This is a good quality piece of equipment and together with the exercise regime is an excellent package at a very good price. The 4 of us on it today were 2 who were no 'spring chickens' and 2 fit 20-somethings and were all catered for very well. At the end of our sessions we were well and truly shattered but didn't realise until we stopped because of having such fun.

Whether your a serious fitness fanatic or just want gentle exercise the Wii Fit can cater for it. Absolutely excellent product and well worth the wait.

5 out of 5  "Hysterical fitness regime" - 25 April 2008
My Wii Fit was waiting for me when I got home from work tonight. My son (6)was desperate to get the packaging off + the game installed and what fun we had!
One and a half hours later I finally called time having tried ski jumping (I'm a champion), jogging (I'm dead), tight-rope walking, yoga, heading footballs (I'm a girl), ski slalom + two-up running. Quite the most laughing I've done for weeks and hugely beneficial to my body tone. My son worked up a keen sweat on the jogging and left me for dust when we ran two-up. This is a must for my aged parents and in-laws. Go Nintendo!

5 out of 5  "FIT-TASTIC :-)" - 25 April 2008
You get yourself set up and can do lots of things. You can set yourself goals on weight loss if you want. You can even hide all your details from other users, so that you can hide your weight from your other half, I really don't want him to see how much I weigh, I don't even want to see it!!! It also works out your BMI ! I've yet to try it out fully but from quickly using it I think it is going to be great. The board feels safe and secure even on carpet.

You have a personal trainer ( your choice - male or female ) to guide you through the excersises which is useful. Jogging is hilarious! You pop the Wii remote in your pocket and the faster you jog on the spot, the faster your character runs! As for the hola hoops that's another thing! great fun I think I am going to become addicted to it. The more you play the more points you get in your fitness pig (I think that what it's called and the more games you can unlock.

I suffer sometimes with a bad back and the yoga will be great for that also the balance games. I tend to lean to the right so it informed me!!

Very clever bit of kit, A must buy for anyone with a Wii

5 out of 5  "Nintendo have done it again!" - 26 April 2008
Wii Fit is a fantastic item encouraging everyone to stay in shape. I particularly love the skiing and jogging games. I've tried the Yoga which is good fun and when I started to loose my balance my trainer told me, "Be careful, you're starting to wobble"! The step areobics were also fun, more so when I lost my timing and my family fell abaout laughing!

I believe most stores sold out well before it's release date, another online retailer sold out in two days, obviously their allocation was low. The key to those who wait for release dates is don't - as you will be sorely dissapointed.

Key games this year fo the Wii are Smash Bros. Brawl, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, Tomb Raider:Underworld (Due out at Christmas) to name but a few.

Buy Wii fit when it becomes available - you won't regret it!

5 out of 5  "Fantastic " - 27 April 2008
I am a 45 year old woman who likes to go to the gym but can't find the time and I get bored very easily with the monotony of exercise. With this fantastic piece of kit I can exercise whenever I choose and do whatever I feel like doing wether it be yoga, aerobics, balance exercises or even skiing. I think it is terrific value and fun for all the family although I don't actually think my children will get much of a look in!
If you can get hold of one buy it and watch those pounds drop off- I feel fitter after just two days!!

5 out of 5  "I love wii fit" - 26 April 2008
I have been playing wii fit all day today, and it seems that nintendo know exactly how to keep me coming back for more. Although being tired out and fighting to keep up, ive still carried on playing. Its a battle for me to keep my time going up and up so i unlock more games. A very clever way to get fit. I cant fault it :)

5 out of 5  "Brilliant fun" - 26 April 2008
The talk of the pub last night was our Wii Fit games, we were little excited kids again, looking forward to opening our presents.
Anyway I have just spent an hour doing most of the exercises/games and must admit I certainly worked up a sweat. The board is far more sturdy than I had imagined, and it is very sensitive. And giving you scores really encourages you to improve and do better.
It's a shame you cannot send your scores to your Mii friends as in Brain Academy as this would make it far more competitive.

5 out of 5  "Unbelievable!" - 26 April 2008
Having pre-ordered this, I was like an excited 3 year old yesterday as I dashed over to PC World to collect it - even the guys in the shop we laughing at my anticipation to get home and rip open the packaging. Point of note - don't rip open the packaging but follow the yellow labelled instructions at the top of the box.

It's weighty and sturdy and adverts don't do justice to the sensitivity of the board itself which is cleverly designed with pressure points all over it.

Upon loading my WiiMee and then entering my stats - we were in stitches watching the body shape change - now that's a really clever incentive to see your body shape change to dare I admit, a rather rotund shape - however it's the incentive I certainly need to change it visibily. When your partner has laughed themselves silly at your changing WiiMee, and then sees their own change....well to say we're still laughing 24 hours later is great.

It's compulsive....first thing I wanted to do this morning was to do my hour of exercise. One point of note is when doing your daily tests, try to do it at the same time each day, as your body changes approximately 2lbs and as I found out this morning much to my suprise, I'd gained 2.2lbs.....

This really is superb and although geared for the more mature market rather than the kids, my youngster has seen games to unlock, such as the Penguin game which he now wants to work towards to unlock.

Have fun everyone!
