5 out of 5  "Mario Kart Wii" - 12 April 2008
I've only played this game for 4/5 hours on the day of release but havn't got a bad thing to say about it!

Ok, so the main change is the 'WiiWheel' something that myself and other long time mario kart players that i've talked to weren't convinced would work, how wrong were we! No need for you classic/gamecube controller... the wheel is perfect. The sensitivity is spot on and gives you perfect control over your kart... or even bike!

Yeah, point 2, new stuff. Having played all the console version of mario kart for hours/days it's good to see old retro tracks crammed in along with plenty of new. The bikes are a welcome addition, theres no obvious advantage in racing a kart against a bike or vice versa so some races have a mix. The new tracks are great, one or two seem a bit familiar and occasionally some seem a bit 'daft' the tree level for example! The classic trcks have been re-mastered, and the DS ones specifically, look amazing! As for the characters, i havn't unlocked them all yet but there are plenty of new inclusions.

Managed to get 10-15 races done online, very easy to get online and jump straight into a race with players from all over the world. No lag problems to report, was just like a standard race in terms of frame rate etc. Will definately play online again.

Lately i've been playing No More Heroes and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (360). They have 2 things in common, both are fantastic games, neither will see the light of day now mario kart and the wii are winning the battle for my scart port!

1 Game is rarely a good enough reason to buy a console, but the Wii and Mario Kart will have you going for ages,

Enjoy!

5 out of 5  "Excellent game, well worth the wait!" - 12 April 2008
This is an excellent game and it's perfectly suited to the Wii. My other half and I spent all last night playing it and it's possibly the best game so far.

There are a few bugs in the menus that I'm sure will be ironed out for future batches but this doesn't detract from the game.

The wii wheel is a real asset, we bought an extra one so we could both play properly and it was definitely worth it.

Fab game!!

5 out of 5  "At last, you can choose which controller to use!" - 11 April 2008
I've always loved Mario Kart and this is an excellent addition to the franchise; more carts (and motorbikes!), more players and more courses. Initially I was dubious about buying this as the idea of controlling the carts accurately and consistently with the motion sensitive Wiimote filled me with doubt but it is fun. However, you don't have to use that method to control it. You can also use the nunchuck attachment, or the classic controller attachment or even Game Cube controllers; huzzah! Now I can play this game without getting arm ache which is so common with Wii games and I've instantly got enough controllers for all my friends because it takes the Game Cube control.

Overall, great game, mindlessly addictive, infinitely playable and has a limitless play life as even once you've completed all the Grand Prix and have no friends around you can go online and play people from around the globe!

5 out of 5  "Smile Central" - 13 April 2008
Firstly - great review from Mr Cheese - so not going through all the game stuff because he's pretty much covered everything EXCEPT that when you go over a jump/ramp/bump REMEMBER to flick your steering wheel and depending on the angle you use your character does tricks. The tricks - dependent on how well they are done add valuable speed. Mario can do scissor legs and handstands while driving, Princess Peach can do a full 360 degree twirl - you'll have to play around to find what the others do - I'm not gonna spoil the fun - suffice to say it is well worth the effort.

This family is an avid fan of Mario in all various guises on all machines, our favourite being Mario Kart Double Dash so this was a must buy. We have all played the game with all the different remotes (you can basically play with any controller you can plug into the Wii) and we all agree that the Official Wii Wheel is the absolute best. I even went back to the shop the same day and bought 3 more so we could all play at once.

It's total fun, makes you smile till your face hurts and best of all it's Mario.

4 out of 5  "Bigger and busier than before!" - 12 April 2008
Having played Mario Kart in it's previous incarnations, this was a game I was looking forward to getting. In fact, it's fair to say that it was the anticipation of this game which convinced me to get a Wii.

Fantastically packaged with the bundled Wii wheel (Wiil?) without a mass excess of plastic (important these days) and ready to go pretty much from the moment you put the disk in (your Wii will request that you run a quick System Update - but this takes mere seconds), no need to study the manual.

Once you've played the game you have the option of installing a Mario kart channel on your Wii, this channel is designed for you to see your ranking against friends, and you status within competitions. You don't have to have the Mario kart game in the machine to use this channel. But it's clear to see that if you want to take your game outside of your living room that there are going to be plenty of events you'll be able to take part in.

Those familiar with the game will be able to jump in straight away, those new to it will find it incredibly intuitive. The basics are simple - but not necessarily easy.

I found myself playing tracks I knew quite well - and losing spectacularly! I must admit that I'm not the best Mario-Karter, but I can be pretty nifty at times. The wheel does take a lot of getting used to. So much so that it frustrated my missus at first - but after some practice you start to become quite deft at controlling your kart/bike/etc.

Graphically this is one of the best Wii games, even the retro tracks I loved playing on the DS version look good. I was worried that the wheel wouldn't be too responsive, but I needn't have worried. Although it feels strange to start with, you soon become comfortable with it - and start to get better. This is probably the toughest version of Mario Kart so far, there are lots of players and the tracks tend to have a lot happening on screen. This makes it often look a little busy, you have to play it for while to become familiar with the tracks to feel confident on them.

The logic behind collecting items remains; with players at the back of he pack picking up the 'prime' objects to help get them back into contention. This is essential for a game (and console) which prides itself on being accessible to players of all ages and abilities. There are three new items in this game, which add to the fun and help show off the capabilities of the Wii. There are many obstacles in the tracks also (I kept hitting cows, and got ran over by Michael Jackson when a Mii I'd created jack-knifed me!).

The Bundled wheel feels solid, there's no faffing about opening compartments to insert your Wii Stick, it simply slots in and the fit is snug enough to accommodate an aggressive driver whilst never coming loose.

The range of vehicles and drivers should please the pickiest of players, I'm looking forward to seeing which additional ones I'll be able unlock when I play this more (and get better at it).

My favourite play mode in Mario Kart was always Battle Mode, but I need to get more savvy with the controls before I can start to be successful with the Wii version! Also - the Battle Mode here can only be performed as a Team Battle Mode. For me this is a shame as I played Battle Mode more than the actual races. Having a time limited team Battle Mode just isn't the same.

So, in a nutshell: graphically great, easy to grasp the basics, but tough to get good at. Mario Kart has grown up, the graphics are good but sometimes there's a bit too much going on. This can be off-putting at first when you're re-learning yourself the controls, but with a bit of practice, it'll all click into place. I'm a bit miffed about the changes to Battle Mode, but at least it means my DS version of Mario Kart will still get played on!

5 out of 5  "Great fun for all ages...sure to have long-lasting appeal" - 12 April 2008
Pre-ordered my game and got it on 11th April (day of release in the UK) - it seemed very good value to say that it comes with one Wii wheel. My sons (aged 5 & 3) had been counting down the days to Mario Kart arriving having had months of fun on the DS Lite version so I even went into town and bought 2 extra Wii wheels (which seemed fairly scarce!) so that we could race on level terms. So all in all, there were pretty high expectations in my house..... Needless to say that the game does not disappoint - all of the usual Mario Kart fun (races / battles) but with an expanded set of characters (12 characters per race), loads of tracks (with many more needing to be unlocked) and a vast array of vehicles for each character (including motorbikes!).

The gameplay is good (but make sure you have a decent sized TV for 3 or 4 multiplayer games) and, as ever, racing is kept even by those at the back getting better weapons to allow them to haul back the leaders. Apart from that there isn't too much to say aside from the fact that the Wii wheel is great fun but takes a bit of getting used to.

Buy this game - it is what the Wii has been waiting for and you won't regret it with the promise of endless fun for people of all ages.

5 out of 5  "brilliant!!!" - 12 April 2008
ok im so happy this game is awesome!!! forget the previous 2 efforts this game is the best maybe even topping the classic snes version!Ive had this 2 days now and ive hardly played the main game.Hang on i hear you say if its that good why havent you played it?my answer ive been online! the online facility of this game makes it awesome,Ive played for hours on end against the worlds racers and it works a treat,a stroke of genius for nintendo making this playable online it increases the game 10 fold ,even without that this game is sublime the wheel is so intuitive ,youll be racing like a pro in no time. The game itself is a treat for retro heads with the best courses from all the previous mariokart games on gamecube,Ds,GBA and snes and adding bikes is a stroke of genius ,more players online choose the bikes than the karts as they are much more manoeuvrable.Forget any other game sell your granny and buy this it really is the best 10/10.

5 out of 5  "2nd Best Entry in the Series - and that's saying a lot" - 12 April 2008
I've owned - and played to death - every Mario Kart game on the home consoles (SNES, N64 & GameCube) and after 48 hours of playing the Wii version I'm ready to commit and declare it the best since Super Mario Kart (which is probably one of my favourite games of all time).

While the SNES version will be hard to knock off its perch - given how fresh, innovative, fun and almost perfect (machine limitations considered) it was - the Wii incarnation is an absolute triumph. Forget the novelty - the Wii wheel (which works like a dream), the inclusion of bikes etc - this FEELS like Mario Kart should feel (unlike the GameCube version which, very good though it was, just lacked that "X" factor).

For people who haven't grown up with the series it's hard to define exactly what that elusive Mario Kart magic actually is. All I'll say is that you know it when you see (and play) it - and it's here in spades.

The inclusion of (upgraded) tracks from previous versions of the game is a touch of genius - and really takes you back to all the happy, idle hours "wasted" on those ol' gems. It's a lovely touch, a nice link with the past, and just helps contribute to the fabulously fun vibe of the game.

Though you'll play and play and play this (some more) a smile will rarely be off your face. That says it all. It's a game that makers you laugh, makes you nostalgic, makes you cheer etc, etc. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Go out, buy it, and bloody enjoy it.

4 out of 5  "Who doesn't love Mario Kart, seriously?" - 12 April 2008
Overall, a cracking game. It is Mario Kart back on top form. Although I didn't really like Double Dash, this game feels like Double Dash but with all the things that Mario Kart DS a success. It's a great game and if you own a Wii and love Nintendo then get this game. The graphics are also great, supporting 16:9, 480p where possible.

The online modes are quick and easy to set up and are a great addition.

Adding the Mario Kart Channel to your main Wii page is a great touch.

The Wii Wheel is okay. Just okay. Being a veteran of Mario Kart I am more inclined to play with the GameCube controller, although I do like the nunchck/wii-mote set up as well. The wheel does work and is a great peripheral that is well made with the obvious Nintendo quality we all expect. It's a great addition to appeal to the casual gamer and because it comes with the game at no real additional cost it is worth trying out, even if its on your first few goes just to sample it. It often puzzles me after how much time Nintendo spent to try and capture the audience with its motion sensing controls it gives us what we've had for years and years (the GameCube controller) but it only does it in a way to keep all players happy. Smart move by Nintendo.

I highly recommend you buy this game. As a game designer and publisher, Nintendo are always spot on.

5 out of 5  "essential" - 12 April 2008
if u have a wii, then u must get this game. this is the best game i have played on wii, and one of the most addictive games of any of the consoles. i bought this game knowing it would be good, but not this good. it is almsot flawless. the only problem is the size o the wheel. it is a little bit too small. but otherwise this game is absolutley an essential purchase. two player and the wifi connection is so unbelievabley fun.

get it!! infact it is one of the best reason to purchase a wii at all. better than any game i have played this year!!
