Editorial:

For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it's fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It's officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you'd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting.

More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You'd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic's incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool's joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I've waited sooo long for this!!
Mario and Sonic finally face off in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, the only game that gives us players the chance to compete in events that take place in scenes based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

You can pick from a list of Mario and Sonic characters including Mario and Sonic (of course) plus Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails et al, in a long-awaited blast of a game that has me playing for hours at a stretch. The interactive Wii controls include actions like swinging the Wii remote to simulate a hammer throw, notching the Nunchuk to shoot arrows, and replicating swimming strokes. We can also discover the best way to win a game by making different movements to discover secret boosts to push us forward to win.

With four playing styles to choose from, you can decide your game strategy: all-around, technical, speed, and power - you can choose and try out, in both single and multiplayer mode, each event individually with Single Match mode (where you can choose your event and play until you score top marks). You can also compete for the highest overall score in a series of events in Circuit mode (where you can either create your own circuit by choosing the individual events, choose a pre-determined circuit, or randomly generate a circuit).AND gamers can learn about the history of the Olympic Games through trivia, quizzes, and mini-games and unlock all-new facts and figures from past Olympic Games in the Gallery.

Events Include:

Fencing - Individual epée
Archery
Shooting - Skeet
Gymnastics - Trampoline
Gymnastics - Vault
Field - High Jump
Field - Pole Vault
Field - Long Jump
Field - Triple Jump
Field - Javelin Throw
Field - Hammer Throw
Rowing - Single Sculls
Table Tennis - Singles
Aquatics - 100m Freestyle
Aquatics - 4x100m Freestyle
Track - 110m and 400m Hurdles
Track - 4x100m Relay
Track -100m and 400m
I love this and will get it for my DS too - please santa!!

5 out of 5  "Mario & Sonic At The Olympics" - 28 November 2007
This game is fun for all the family. I found lots of the events extremely fun and I liked the use of the wii remote. The characters all have their special qualities and the graphics and sound are superb. Also it has mini-games where you can gain facts about the Olympics. This game is challenging but one you cant stop playing. This is a must have for Christmas.

We have had a very sporty weekend in our house, and I do mean IN our house. We even went out and got another controller so that we could all compete at the same time. This game is huge and so much fun. Archery is a little bit tricky but watching people doing the hammer throw is so funny.
This is a great family game and a must for everybodys Christmas list.

We've only played this for a couple of hours so far and at last there appears to be a game released for the Wii which uses the fun and originality that everyone felt when playing Wii Sports for the first time. The use of the Wii controller on the 6 or so events that we've played so far is fantastic.
Our boy (nearly 5) has already beaten me on a couple of events so it shows that this is a game for all ages as well.
Whether you want to pick this game up for a 10 minute play or a longer spell, it seems to be the perfect game for everyone to have a great laugh over a few Christmas drinks.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games is a top notch must own game. Our fave videogame heroes Mario and Sonic and their friends have come together for the very first time to battle it out and compete in lots of sporting events. This game has great graphics and lots of gameplay and gives you a workout too (bargin). 10/10
If its not already it will be one of the Biggest sellers of 2007.

5 out of 5  "Classic Game Featuring 2 Classic Computer Names" - 2 December 2007
This game is GREAT i first seen the clip on this site and thought it looked good and it exceeded expectations. I love athletic games but there was never any good ones but Nintendo have done a great job with this. All the major events are here 100m, 4x100m, 400m, swimming, table tennis.

This game is just fun period especially cos its on the WII and ur not just hitting buttons it brings the game to life and on 2 player it is even better.

Only bad thing about it is ur arms might get it hurt lol

5 out of 5  "Top Notch Game" - 6 December 2007
This game is super fun for all the family, easy to understand controls, using the Wii's remote super motion sensor to its best.
You get to choose any one of 16 Mario or Sonic characters to try and win different olympic events, from 100m sprints to single rowing.

You can also get your Mii created for Wii Sports in the action as well, playing as him or her against sonic and friends or mario and friends.

This is a superb game for any age, young or old, all the family will enjoy it, single or mulitplayer (better with more I say).

Get it for xmas, if not before.

Five Big Stars and two thumbs up for this one

5 out of 5  "Best Wii game i own" - 5 December 2007
This game is absolutely brilliant. it's a great idea from Sega to join two of the most loved characters in one game. It includes pretty much every olympic event you can think of, and the best part is, you can play it as a cartoon plumber, a blue hedgehog or any other character from both franchises of games! it also uses the wiimote and nunchuck very effectively, for example, to run you have to shake the remote and nunchuck up and down continuously. You can even attempt to beat the official olympic and wold records. If you have friends over, it is a great idea to play with them, as i guarantee they will love it aswell as you! Great fun for anyone to play, probably the best wii game i own.
